The Presidential Debate (first of three)

I watched the debate last friday.

I believe that Obama was the clear winner of the debate because Obama kept on point while McCain continued to get off the point and talk about his "record" as a senator.

Obama also had an answer for each question that was asked. I thought he came out the better candidate in the debate.

I am a McCain supporter and I too watched the debate. I have a different opinion. I think the clear winner was McCain. He stayed on topic, and presented strong answers to all questions. He was clear and powerful.

It is interesting to note how many times Obama conceded that McCain was right about a number of topics. Obama said that McCain was right about
1) the need for more responsibility,
2) that earmarks had been abused,
3) there was too much influence of lobbyists and special interest groups,
4) that business taxes are high,
5) the need to make budget cuts,
6) that violence had been reduced in Iraq,
7) that the President must be prudent,
8) that the Iraq situation was difficult and
9) that we cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran.

These do not seem to me to be the words of a leader. These are the words of a follower.

Additionally, McCain and Obama came out on two different sides in regard to the size and scope of government. McCain stated he was for reducing the size and power of the government by reducing spending. He stated that these earmarks, these special projects, have corrupted the officials who are entrusted with the taxpayers' money. He said he will stop that practice. Whereas Obama had himself requested almost $1 billion in earmarks for his state until he began his bid for President. So we are left with a man of actions versus a man of words. I think one speaks far louder than the other.
